The Smartphone, MID and Netbook Space is Getting More Interesting

I was at the Consumer Electronics Show at Las Vegas recently. Such shows are always harbingers of many trends and changes. The unmistakable trend is the ever increasing interest in computing and entertainment power in the hands of users right down to the bottom of the pyramid.

Apple and its Sway

While Apple continues to maintain its sway in the Smartphone market, the mobile Internet device (MID) and netbook market is seeing many players. This segment is slated to grow by 14 %in 2010 alone. All this is when there are no fears of these devices cannibalizing the laptop.

Intel, the Atom, Netbooks and MIDs

The positioning of netbooks and MIDs as devices enabling Internet surfing, emailing, playing basic online games, listening to music and running basic computing apps is spot on. With the sound backing of Intel and its well-received Atom processor, growth prospects for netbooks and MIDs and apps made specifically for them are tremendous.

Intel’s competition from Marvell, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and others only underscores the importance of this space and points to the fact that it shall see explosive growth in the future.

What does it spell for Permeative?

These are exciting times. Our iPhone apps have been seeing a great response on Apple’s app store. Customers have been asking us to translate more of their ideas into iPhone apps via our Ideas2iPhone service offering. There is more to share. I have been busy meeting customers and business partners for the past few days. I shall soon write another post with all insights I have gathered.
